Using props in a branding session is a great way to add detail to your images and showcase certain aspects of your business clients may never actually see. I absolutely love finding creative ways to use props in my story sessions! Here’s a few key reasons to use props, along with a few examples to give you a little inspiration!
Props create connections with your ideal client.
The whole point of branding photography is to help your audience develop a connection with the person behind the business. Incorporate props that show that you have something in common with them. Another branding photographer I know calls these “uncommon commonalities,” and I love that! Showcasing certain books on your desk or coffee table featuring titles that resonate with your audience is one such prop idea. Another may be a prop that relates to a hobby of yours or a lifestyle choice, like running or juicing… It doesn’t have to be directly related to your business. Remember, we are working on building connections.
They can be used to bring in your brand colors or patterns.
Cushions or pillows on a couch or different color files, notebooks, pens or coffee mugs are just some examples of how you can incorporate pops of color. If you’re incorporating any electronics such as your phone or laptop, you could get a cover or case that matches your brand as a way to feature your brand colors.
They can be used to help share your brand values.
So many small business owners I know work from home, and value being able to set their own hours and their family time. So, they’ve incorporated their families and pets into their session. Other ways to incorporate your brand values are letter boards with a resonating quote, coffee mugs with a funny saying, etc.
Props give your audience a glimpse behind the scenes.
So much of our behind the scenes work is done online, so I always recommend clients to bring a laptop or smartphone to use as a prop. Also, people love to see your workspace, so add a few personal touches to your workspace to give clients an idea of what you’re all about. Flowers, a camera or a passport (if you love to travel) could work really well for this. A funky planning board is also a good example.
Props can highlight details.
Detail shots such as a close up of your hands typing on your laptop or scrolling a newsfeed is a great way to shoot details. So is showing you write in a journal, or of your coffee mug next to your laptop. All popular detail prop ideas!
